More Info Regarding File Extension EMZ
Sometimes, the archived file ends with an .EM extension instead of .EMZ. In this case, the file extension has to be renamed to .EMZ in order to ensure it doesn't output any error while opening.
At times you might think of extracting the original .EMF file out of an .EMZ archive so that it can be used within other Graphic applications as well. In that case, the archive has to be decompressed with the help of some application. Notice that the .EMZ archives are compressed using the .GZIP compression algorithm, hence for decompressing it you need a decompression application that is compatible with this algorithm.
Opening an .EMZ file:
If you want to open an .EMZ file upon a Windows based PC, the best and most convenient solution is to use Microsoft Office or Visio, which natively support the format. But you can only import the vector image file compressed inside the .EMZ file into another MS Office document. If you want to extract the original .EMF file out of the .EMZ file, use a decompression application with .GZIP compression algorithm. For Windows operating system, GZIP (Gzip.exe) and SharpZipLib are two such applications.
For Mac OS and Linux based systems, however, you have to use some decompression application first which can extract the .EMF file from an .EMZ file. For a Mac OS based Apple computer, Smith Micro Stuffit Expander, Dare to be Creative iArchiver and Zipeg are some popular archiving applications that can be of use to you. Similarly, for a Linux based computer you can use an application named unrar that is known to support many compression algorithms.
Problems and errors while opening .EMZ files:
If you are not able to open an .EMZ file successfully, the possible reasons might be:
i. You might not be having a compatible application to open the .EMZ file. Normally, only Microsoft Office and Visio are known to offer native support for opening an .EMZ file.
ii. If you are trying to decompress the .EMZ file in order to extract the .EMF file, check out that the decompressing application supports the .GZIP compression algorithm as .EMZ files are archived using this algorithm. If the decompressing application doesn't support it, you won't be able to extract the file successfully.
iii. Within your computer, the .EMZ file extension might have been associated to be opened with some other application that is incompatible for opening the desired file format. Give a check, and associate it with the right application.
iv. Sometimes an .EMZ file ends with an .EM extension which might be inducing the error while attempting to open it. Just rename its extension to .EMZ and try again, it might work now.
v. If your .EMZ file has been hosted upon a UNIX or Linux based system, the uppercase extension “.EMZ” might be the reason of the trouble as these operating systems usually don't support uppercase characters. Just make the extension lowercase, i.e. “.emz” and see the result.
vi. The .EMZ archive might have been damaged or corrupted while transferring or downloading; alternatively it also might have been infected with some deadly virus. Scanning the file through an efficient Anti Virus application might be helpful.
